The chemical sector is the second largest manufacturing sector in Japan, incorporating a wide range of subsectors from pharmaceutical products to synthetic resin production. The traditional focus on the production of low value mass products has pushed the industry into a highly advancing competition with neighbouring Asian countries, and manufacturers are currently undertaking major strategy shifts to survive in this environment. Many see their future in the production of high value-added fine chemicals promising large growth rates, but the uncertainty about the success of the product prevails.
